The appointment of the former President of Argentina Mr. Nestor Kirchner as Secretary General of the UNASUR (Union of South-American Nations) could be disastrous for the new hemispheric institution. Mr. Kirchner has been accused of illegal enrichment, and next year -when her wife will not longer be the President of Argentina- there is a certain possibility that both could be prosecuted. That potential scandal could put into jeopardy the whole existence of UNASUR. It should be more convenient to wait until next year and then nominate the new Secretary General. It should be a person of prestige, with highly ethical and professional standards.
As we know, the President of Argentina Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner (also known as CFK) was yesterday in Lima in an official visit to Peru. During the visit, CFK signed several agreements with the peruvian President Alan Garcia. Lima and Buenos Aires are in good diplomatic terms now. According to Argentine sources Peruvian president Alan Garcia agreed with Mrs. Kirchner that in the meeting of UNASUR next May, Peru will support the candidacy of the argentinian President´s husband Mr. Nestor Kirchner to become the first Secretary Gral. of the UNASUR (Union of Nations of South America). Nestor Kirchner was President in Argentina and now is a member of the argentinian congress, which gives him judicial immunity. Both Nestor Kirchner and his wife the President have been accused of getting rich during their two terms in the Presidency of Argentina. In regard to the arms race in the sub continent the President of Peru said “I celebrate that we can work in Unasur to achieve peace and security, cutting expenditure on arms, which only generates poverty and greater inequality”, in reference of his position against arms race and the support of Argentina to his proposal against rearmament.
