The FARC´a military power has been reduced in 60% since 2002. Another senior commander was killed.
Enrique Zuñiga , a senior commander of the FARC -Colombia’s largest narcoguerrilla- and six other terrorists accompanying him were killed Wednesday in a bombing of the Colombian air force (with American support) in the mountainous region of Cocora Canyon located in Central Colombia, authorities said. The Police (also supported by American intel) supplied the coordinates of Zuñiga´s camp and a plane conducted the surgical bombing. Police verified the identity of the bodies.
Ray Cyrus Gómez, alias “Enrique Zuniga” was commander of the “Front 50” of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), and his death took place 25 kilometers from the city of Ibague, capital of the department Tolima.
Zuñiga had 36 arrest warrants against him for murder, kidnapping and rebellion.
Since the start of the Colombian offensive in 2002, ordered by President Uribe, the security strategy has been successful in reducing massacres, murders, extorsive kidnappings, and other attacks on the Colombian democratic society.
The most important of all FARC commanders killed, photo shows "Raul Reyes" in a body bag.
Many FARC terrorist commanders have been killed such as Enrique Zuñiga, Raul Reyes, Martin Caballero and Tomas Medina , and the military power of the FARC have been reduced from 18,000 men under arms in 2002 to 7,000 today. Also, the founder and historical leader of FARC Manuel Marulanda alias “Tirofijo” died of natural causes, during this period.
However, FARC keeps a significant presence in strategic regions for the production and trafficking of cocaine, its main source of funding.
The FARC is now trying to influence the electoral debate, hoping to convince the next government to stop the offensive and return to the negotiation table, such as in the early 2000.
