Venezuela has arrested eight Colombians suspected of spying on the oil exporting nation’s electricity system, the interior minister said on Tuesday, amid power shortages that have dented the popularity of President Hugo Chavez.

The arrests may stoke tensions between the Andean neighbors ahead of Colombia’s presidential election in May. They follow months of jibes between the governments of Colombia’s President Alvaro Uribe and Chavez.

Interior Minister Tareck El Aissami said the detainees were arrested during the last two weeks in two different states, and that a camera containing photos of electricity substations, transmission systems and roads was found among their possessions, along with documents in English.

It is interesting to comment here that nowadays satelites and drone planes are much more effective to spy than using cameras. Maybe they were tourists. Even Google Earth is more effective than a photocamera.
