Former Argentine President Nestor Kirchner was Tuesday named the first secretary-general of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), a regional bloc consisting of twelve South American countries.
Kirchner, husband of current Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, was selected unanimously as the head of the bloc by South American leaders attending a UNASUR summit in Caradales, near the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires.
The UNASUR came into being after leaders of twelve South American nations signed a treaty in Brasilia on 24th May 2008 to set up the bloc, which is modeled on the European Union. READ MORE HERE.
