Canada: human trafficking and explotation is 3rd profit maker for organized crime.
In rough terms, human smuggling is taking a person across an international border for money. Human trafficking is controlling and exploiting people for someone else’s profit when they get to their destination,” said OPP Const. Mark Dew, of Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers in Canada.
That is the international definition. He said there is also domestic trafficking, referring to a victim trafficked within Canada.
Dew said traffickers use various methods to control their victims, including force, sexual assault and threats of violence. He also said that human trafficking is the third largest profit maker for organized crime, behind illegal drugs and gun sales.
Victims of human trafficking in Canada are often involved in the sex trade.
