NUEVO LAREDO – Police said Wednesday they had seized an arsenal of assault rifles that were allegedly destined for the hands of the assassins of the powerful drug cartels in Mexico, according to Reuters.
Thanks to an anonymous tip, police in Laredo, Texas, on Saturday managed to locate the cargo that was hidden in a van, in which traveled two people. Both were arrested.
“It’s one of the biggest cases we’ve seen in the history of this city, is a tremendous blow to drug trafficking,” said Alberto Escobedo reporters Wednesday, police in Laredo, the border with Nuevo Laredo in Mexico.
The police found assault rifles, 174 AK-47, over 200 high capacity magazines, bayonets, and some 10,000 bullets.
The violence of drug cartels who are fighting against each other and security forces, has left almost 23,000 dead since December 2006, when President Felipe Calderon took office and launched a military campaign against them.
