Brazil: Cleaning democracy from crooks.

President Lula and the new law against criminal politicians.

BRASILIA – President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva signed on Friday a bill that prevents of having political candidates with criminal records or  facing criminal accusations in court, said a report of Reuters Brasil.

Known as  “the clean file” , the new law did not receive any president’s veto and will be published in the Official Gazette of  today.  The law stated that it is up to the Electoral Court to decide whether the rule is valid already for the October elections.

The proposal prevents the candidacy of politicians with conviction in court. The new law allows, however, that the politician convicted can appeal to try to suspend the ineligibility and participate in the election.

In another aspect of the law, the Senate approved that the new rules will be valid only for cases that are judged starting from the date of the approval of the law. READ MORE HERE (in portuguese)
