Uruguay: Judge jailed four navy officers accused of corruption and fraud.

The Uruguayan Justice ordered the prosecution of four officers of the Navy, including the former Supreme Navy Admiral Commander Juan Fernandez Maggio, accused of doing fraud.

The former commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral (r) Juan Fernandez Maggio, was prosecuted with prison as coauthor of “an ongoing crime of fraud” for his implication in “fraudulent purchase” of a hydraulic crane and a engine test machine for almost U $ S 600,000. The crane and machine were never bought.

The Judge Specialized in Organized Crime Mrs. Graciela Gatti, ordered the prosecution of the four high ranked navy officers and their imprisonment. The name of the other officers accused of being authors of “an ongoing crime of fraud” are the Navy Captain Gerardo Febles (former head of the Logistics Division and former military attache at the Consulate of Uruguay in Brasilia), Navy Captain Pablo da Costa (member of the Bureau of Navy Materials) and the Navy Captain Danilo Damonte (former Head of Planning and Budget Office of the Navy of Uruguay), for the same offense.

This is the first major corruption scandal within the Uruguayan Army. The Justice will continue with the ongoing investigations.
