Peru: The Sinaloa Cartel experienced a major blow.

Joaquin "Chapo" Guzman Loera: Billionaire Drug Lord doing "business" now in Peru.

On Wednesday, in Arequipa, Peru’s National Police seized a shipment of 3 tons and 157 kilos of drugs that were destined for the Asian continent. The drugs were produced in the Valley of the Apurimac and Ene Rivers (VRAE) and the narcotics , according to preliminary investigations, belonged to the Mexican drug cartel of Sinaloa.

The drug was seized in the district of Arequipa Majes-El Pedregal and, simultaneously, the authorities arrested 16 people in Lima, Arequipa and the city of Ilo, Moquegua. Among those arrested were four Mexican drug dealers and one PNP active agent.

According to the director of the PNP, Miguel Hidalgo, this is the biggest blow to drug trafficking in Peru so far this year.

Notably, in the region of the VRAE, a kilo of cocaine costs approximately a thousand dollars. That much, in Asia, is worth up to $ 150 000. Had been smuggled into Asia the profit for the cartel would have surpassed U.S. $ 400 million.

According to police sources, the organization called “los Mixtos”, would be led by the Sinaloa Cartel. The traffickers tried to smuggle the drug through the ports of Matarani (located in Arequipa)  and Ilo in the regiong of Moquegua. In order to transport the drugs, they were assembling fishing boats that had been specially designed to hide the narcotics.
