Defense Summit of The Americas gather in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

The Defense Minister of Bolivia, Mr. Ruben Saavedra, confirmed that from tomorrow ,  thirty member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) will participate in the Defense Summit, which will bring together the defense ministers from across the continent.

Mainly, the Summit will discuss two themes: a) the interrelation of democracy, Armed Forces and society and b) armed forces and its cooperation in tackling natural disasters.

“The event is held every two years and the VIII Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas was held in Canada, where it was determined that the next venue would be Bolivia,” said Saavedra.

Approximately 300 delegates will attend the meetings, including international observers as the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) Mr. Jose Miguel Insulza, as well as experts and advisers on security and defense.

During the meeting, informal conversations to discuss the situation at the border will take place, between the nicaraguan and costa rican ministers, with the support of Secretary Insulza.

Saavedra also confirmed his bilateral meeting with Secretary of Defense of the United States, Mr. Robert Gates, who will attend the Summit as the representative of the U.S. This meeting will take place on Sunday, a day before the inauguration, informed Minister Saavedra.
