Argentina: government claim success in fighting illegal drug trafficking.

Minister of Justice in Argentina, Julio Alak.

The security forces of Argentina have seized some 108.6 tons of drugs in operations carried out between January and October in the country, 12.5 percent more than the same period of 2009, according to statements of argentinian officials like the Minister of Justice Julio Alak.

Alak is a close member of Kirchner´s entourage.

The drugs seized is worth about $ 75 million and in those operations 1,021 people were imprisoned on drug charges, said a statement from the Ministry of Justice, Security and Human Rights.

“This year we will reach a record drug seizures,” said Alak,  “in Argentina there is no place to rest in the fight against drug trafficking.”

Alak said security forces reached an “unprecedented level of efficiency” by executing a plan to combat drug trafficking elaborated by President Kirchner in 2003, including “an ongoing process” of investment in training and equipment.

” We added more than 20000 troops to the Federal Police, the Gendarmerie, the Prefecture (Coast Guard) and the Airport Security Police and the troops are equipped with the latest technology,” he said.

Most seizures are for shipments of marijuana from Paraguay and cocaine entered through the border areas of Bolivia and the north of Argentina.
