Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd supports improving trade relations with Latin America
Latin America is very interested in strengthening bilateral trade ties with Australia, particularly in the mining sector where it can benefit from australian technical expertise and Asian export contacts.
The senior australian trade commissioner for Latin America, Crispin Conroy is in charge of Austrade s office in Santiago de Chile, and he recently stated that Columbia and Brazil were growing markets for Australian miners and mining service providers.
Such companies already operated in Chile and Peru, and about 70 Australian mining-related companies operate in Chile compared to only one or two about a decade ago. Some 40 of these firms are now active in Peru.
“In Chile, Australia is the fourth largest investor in the mining sector, mainly in copper mines, and that has flowed up to a few other countries in the region,” Mr Conroy said….
