Former President of Venezuela Carlos Andres Perez died in Miami at 88 years old.

The former President of Venezuela, Carlos Andrés Pérez died Saturday in Miami. He was 88 years old

During his political life, Mr. Perez tried to make Venezuela a leader of the developing world during a 1970s oil boom only to have his legacy upended in a tumultuous 1989 return to the presidency marked by civil unrest, coup attempts, impeachment and exile.

Among his international achievements, and during his second time in office, the former President Carlos Andres Perez helped to reinstate democracy in Nicaragua, backing free elections in the central american country and supporting anti-communist and democratic  movements. That tough anti-Sandinista position of President Perez caused the hatred of the Cuban regime and the Marxist left, leading to street demonstrations that ended in the “Caracazo”and then in supporting the coup attempt of Colonel Hugo Chavez.

The cause of his death was a heart attack, informed his daughter, María Francia Pérez.

During his first Presidency Mr. Pérez -in the mid-1970s- opened the way for state-led development efforts.  READ MORE HERE.
