Security: the Zetas and mexican organized crime kidnapped over 10000 central american migrants in last six months.

Rául Plascencia Villanueva

In just six months, mexican organized crime, being the Zetas the main responsibles, kidnapped  over 10 000 Central American migrants. The Zetas and other cartels/gangs carried out more than 200 mass kidnappings in Mexico, according to public statements of  the president of the National Human Rights Commission, Raul Plascencia Villanueva.

According to Plascencia ,  in every illegal operation  masked men dressed in black and heavily armed were kidnapping from about 100 to 150 people. For each kidnapped, he said, the criminals claim between 5 to 15 thousand dollars in ransom.

In cases like the mexican location of Oaxaca, there are suspicions that individuals of the police and staff of the National Migration Institute allegedly intervened in the abductions.

Plascencia also said that the kidnappings occured mainly in Chiapas, Tabasco, in southern Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Coahuila , Oaxaca and San Luis Potosi.

Plascencia Villanueva said that his institution will present a report called “Diagnosis of Abduction of Migrants in 2010”  in the next few weeks, and the report will show the number of abductions by state, national and also testimonials that offer a broader picture of what is happening.

According to their records, from April to September, the Commission reported the kidnapping of more than 10,000 people. However, he recalled that in 2009  the total figure was of 20 000 central americans caught and kidnapped for extortion.

According to reports and testimonies the Commission identified new routes in which migrants are moving across the mexican country. They are now using the route Ixtepec Chahuites, and Oaxaca. Previously moved through Tabasco, Veracruz and Tamaulipas.

“We witness countless reports and testimonials who confirm that they are properly structured criminal gangs, not only for the kidnapping, but also for human trafficking and this criminals carry out this activity with a high margin of impunity, without being detected. “
