Due to brazilian superstition and insecurity in Rio, the opening of 2014 World Cup will be in Sao Paulo.

Corinthians stadium will host the inauguration of the World Cup 2014 in Sao Paulo

President Rousseff met with the governor and the mayor of Sao Paulo’s capital, on Friday, and she expressed her hope that the opening ceremony and inaugural soccer game of the 2014 World Cup will be played at the Sao Paulo stadium to be built by the brazilian football team Corinthians.

The Sports Minister Orlando Silva said the meeting was to discuss practical measures to ensure the stadium in Sao Paulo with a capacity of 65 thousand people.

” President Dilma Rousseff invited the governor and mayor of Sao Paulo to attend the meeting because she has the perception that the city of Sao Paulo is the city that should be in charge of the opening World Cup in 2014 due to its infrastructure, the hotel chains and the quality of services , ” Orlando Silva told reporters.

One sports journalist commented to The Americas Post that the brazilian government is worried about two things:

a) the insecurity in Rio, and the outcome of the current police raids in the slums in Rio and

b) in Rio de Janeiro and its historic stadium of Maracana, Brazil was defeated 2-1 by Uruguay in the final of the 1950 World Cup. Brazil never recuperated from that defeat, and people is increasingly superstitious about Brazil playing in Maracana and loosing again.

Mayor Gilberto Kassab (DEM) confirmed that the opening ceremony of the World Cup will be held in Brazil in São Paulo and that the construction of the stadium should begin in April.

“We can say today that we will undoubtedly have the opening of the World Cup in Sao Paulo in Itaquera at the stadium of the soccer team Corinthians,” he said.

He added that in the next week an agreement should be signed between the government, Corinthians and the municipality, to assure the land where the stadium will be built in Itaquera.

In November, the government of Sao Paulo and the organizing committee announced the Corinthians stadium as the chosen to host the opening of the tournament. However, the project’s initial stage of the Corinthians had a capacity of 48 000 and Fifa requires 65 000 seats for the opening game.

The amount required for the expansion of the arena has not been disclosed nor detailed how will this will be funded. However, the loan of 400 million reais (brazilian currency) of the Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Economico e Social (BNDES) “is going well,” said the governor of Sao Paulo , Geraldo Alckmin (PSDB).
