The ATF (abbreviation of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) is a federal law enforcement organization within the Department of Justice of the United States.

The ATF´s  responsibilities includes the

a) investigation and prevention of federal offenses involving the unlawful use, manufacture, and possession of :

a1) firearms

a2) explosives

a3) acts of arson and bombings

a4) illegal trafficking of alcohol and tobacco products

b) regulation via licensing the sale, possession, and transportation of firearms, ammunition, and explosives in interstate commerce.

ATF has nearly 5,000 employees and an annual budget of $1.12 billion U.S. dollars (2010).
