Serbia announced the arrest of criminal general Ratko Mladic, the “butcher of Sarajevo and Srebrenica”.

Bosnian Serb wartime criminal general Ratko Mladic ,69, was arrested in Serbia Thursday in the village of Lazarevo, near the northeastern town of Zrenjanin around 100 km (60 miles) from the capital Belgrade, in the early hours.

Mladic, is accused of orchestrating the massacre of 8,000 men and boys in the town of Srebrenica and a brutal 43-month siege of Sarajevo during Bosnia’s 1992-5 war.  Hardly to recognize and with false identity papers, Mladic was found in a farmhouse owned by a cousin.

As soon as the extradition process is finished Serbia will put Mladic on a plane and send him to the international war crimes tribunal in The Hague. The Bosnian Serb Army under Mladic was armed and funded by the late Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic.

Shortly afterwards, European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton arrived in Belgrade.
