The first GOP debate in New Hampshire Monday night was a fine showing for ex-Massachusetts Gov Mitt Romney.

A stone’s throw from the state he governed, he was spared any strong attacks on the health care plan that was supposed to be the albatross around his campaign.

For Romney, it was a hat trick: Look presidential, avoid any serious scrapes and manage to come across as a reasonably warm human being.

Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, who formally announced her campaign shortly after the debate began, also comported herself well. She was concise, firm and likable, playing to the crowd without sounding like a shameless panderer.

Now, everybody is waiting to see the results of the first poll done after the GOP debate.
