While Chavez remains in Cuba, police in Venezuela did most significant drug seizure in years.

Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami says police have seized more than 5.5 tons of cocaine, and the Minister calls the drug seizure in eastern Venezuela one of the country’s hardest blows to drug traffickers in recent years.

A Saturday message on El Aissami’s Twitter site says the seizure is “one of the most significant drug confiscations” in recent years. READ MORE HERE

A month ago , the same Minister  gave the U.S. Coast Guard credit for cooperation in a large drug seizure.

Then, the Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said in a statement the U.S. Coast Guard discovered 2,030 pounds (925 kilograms) of cocaine on a fishing boat off Venezuela’s Caribbean coast after Venezuelan officials gave them permission to board.

He said five Venezuelans were arrested, but did not say when the seizure occurred.

The announcement came at a moment of guarded optimism for an improvement in U.S. relations with Venezuela.
