Mexican government websites hit by hackers
International hacker group Anonymous is now active in Mexico
Several Mexican government websites were crashed on Thursday, including the Ministries of Defense and Public Security. Hacker group Anonymous has claimed responsibility. A Mexican Defense Ministry spokesman said only that the website was experiencing technical difficulties.
A statement from Anonymous, a relatively disorganized group that has attacked financial and government websites around the world, referred to their action as OpIndependencia but did not provide a reason for the attack.
A Twitter account for Anonymous Hispano simply stated “We are anonymous, we are legion, we don’t forgive, we don’t forget. Wait for us.”
Anonymous also claimed to be targeting President Felipe Calderon’s home page, but that website appears to be still available.
This week marked the anniversary of the start of Mexico’s fight for independence from Spain in 1810.
