Election banners in Iraq
In spite for all bombings the Iraqi people is voting. In spite of all threats (Al Qaeda threatened almost everyone there) the Iraqis are voting. In spite of the Katiushka rockets and many iraqis assasinated today during the election, the Iraqis are participating and going massively to the polls. The vast majority of U.S. soldiers are in the barracks, and the people of Iraq is participating as never before in an election. No one said that the road to democracy in Iraq was going to be easy. And in fact, it could still go south in Iraq. The shia´s links to Iran, the anger of some Sunnis for losing power, a massive attack of al Qaeda foreign terrorists. One or all of these possibilities could send Iraq into a bloody civil war. But the fact is that todays election shows that Iraq has a serious head start on democracy. Democratic stability and progress in Iraq is the cornerstone of a better life for people in the Middle East. It is good for the region, it is good for the world, even for the casue of The Americas.
