Jose Alberto de Leon Gramajo, head of passports in Guatemala’s Department of Immigration,  has been arrested on human trafficking and/or people smuggling charges, highlighting Guatemala’s role as a hub of illegal immigration and false documents into Mexico and Europe.

De Leon was arrested by guatemalan prosecutors from the specialist anti-impunity unity of the Public Ministry. The prosecution process started after Police detained two Colombian citizens trying to reach the Netherlands by using false passports in the La Aurora airport in Guatemala City in 2011.

The Colombians revealed everything  and authorities then traced the illegal passports  back to De Leon Gramajo after reviewing systems data, testimonies, and surveillance camera footage.
