The Americas Security News.- Sweden-Brazil military partnership on aircraft Gripen.

After a decade of discussion, Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff announced Wednesday the acquisition of 36 Gripen NG fighter jets, from Sweden’s Saab , for the FX-2 program of the Brazilian Air Force. The planes will be delivered in 4 years. The total cost of the deal will be $4.5 billion. The losers are France’s Dassault with the Rafale model and  Boeing with the F/A-18 e/F Super Hornet. Boeing was considered the stronger bid, but following the revelation that the U.S. National Security Agency had been spying on Brazilian officials and companies, including on the president herself, the relationship between Brazil and the U.S. frayed. The strengths of the Gripen are a low price, low maintenance, low fuel consumption and greater transference of know how/technology to Brazil. The weaknesses of the gripen are its smaller size, for not being tested enough in combat, and maybe also politics and spionage.
